Overview
Chapter 13 frames the industrial boiler as a closed circuit rather than a single vessel, walking the loop from pretreatment through deaeration, the boiler vessel, and the steam-condensate return. It explains why steam is the preferred medium for moving large amounts of heat (latent heat of roughly 970 BTU per pound released on condensation) and why each stage exists to solve a problem the prior stage creates: softeners strip hardness that would scale the tubes, deaerators and oxygen scavengers remove dissolved oxygen that corrodes hot metal, blowdown controls the concentration that drives carryover, and amines protect condensate from carbonic acid. It matters because a boiler behaves as a system, so a single broken link (the chapter’s lost-condensate case study) cascades into hardness breakthrough, low cycles, oxygen ingress, runaway chemical demand, and acidic condensate at once.
