Acid-Base Neutralization (1:1 Stoichiometry)
Hydrogen and hydroxide combine one-to-one to form water, the basis for computing how much acid a given amount of base can neutralize.
Variables
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrogen ion (proton) | mol | |
| Hydroxide ion | mol |
Worked example
Stomach has 0.01 mol H+; gallon of alkaline water has 1.2 x 10^-5 mol OH-. Remaining H+ = 0.01 - 0.000012 = 0.009988 mol.
