Corrosion Cell (Ohm’s Law)
Governs the corrosion cell as an electrical circuit. The rate of metal loss is directly proportional to the corrosion current flowing from anode to cathode. Higher voltage drives higher current, higher resistance reduces current.
Variables
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| I | Corrosion current (rate of metal loss is proportional to this) | A |
| V | Voltage, the electromotive force from oxidizers, oxygen gradients, or galvanic couples | V |
| R | Resistance, increased by passivation, protective films, and coatings | ohm |
