ppm from Added Substance
Calculate the resulting concentration in ppm after a known mass of substance is added to a known volume of water.
Variables
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Mass of Substance Added | Mass of solute introduced | lb |
| Mass of Resulting Solution | Mass of solute plus mass of water | lb |
| ppm | Resulting concentration | ppm |
Worked example
Add 17 lb of sodium chloride to 300 gal of water. Water mass is 300 gal times 8.34 lb/gal, which is 2,502 lb. Solution mass is 17 plus 2,502, which is 2,519 lb. ppm is (17 / 2,519) times 1,000,000, which is 6,750 ppm.
