Definition

The framework that all matter is built from atoms, whose behavior is governed by a small set of rules covering charge, energy, and geometry. It organizes reality rather than complicating it.

The premise is that simple rules produce an enormous range of consistent outcomes, so matter becomes predictable even though it does not become simple. This is what lets chemists treat a trillion atoms the same way they treat one, and it is the conceptual foundation for explaining scale, corrosion, and fouling at the atomic level.
