Brine Tank

Definition

The vessel of salt pellets and water that supplies concentrated sodium chloride for softener regeneration. An empty brine tank is the single most common cause of softener failure.

If the salt runs out, the regeneration cycle runs with dilute brine, the resin does not fully regenerate, and hardness breaks through on the next service cycle and floods the feedwater. Checking the brine tank on every site visit is essential, and documenting an empty tank in writing protects the water treater. An empty brine tank is the single most common reason water treaters get fired from accounts.
