Condensate Energy Value
Definition
The recoverable sensible heat in returned condensate, calculated as mass flow times specific heat times the temperature difference between condensate and cold makeup. It quantifies the fuel saved by returning condensate.
Using Q equals m times Cp times delta T, a system returning 5,000 lb/hr at 180 degrees F against 55 degree F makeup saves 625,000 BTU/hr, or about 5,475 MMBTU per year. Dividing by boiler efficiency converts recovered heat into displaced fuel, so at 80 percent efficiency and 10 dollars per MMBTU the savings reach about 68,400 dollars per year. This excludes water, sewer, and chemical savings.
