Corrosion Rate Interpretation
Definition
Corrosion rate interpretation is the practice of judging measured MPY against benchmark ranges that differ for open and closed systems. Acceptable rates differ because operating environments differ.
Open recirculating cooling systems and closed loops have different thresholds because of differences in oxygen exposure, water chemistry stability, and contaminant levels. For open systems carbon steel is excellent below 1 MPY and severe above 10, while closed loops are far stricter, with carbon steel excellent below 0.2 MPY and severe above 1. Copper alloys carry their own tighter ranges in both system types.
