Dielectric Union
Definition
A dielectric union is an insulating barrier installed between dissimilar metals to break the electrical path and stop galvanic corrosion. It prevents the galvanic battery from forming.
By interrupting metal-to-metal contact, the dielectric union removes one of the three requirements for galvanic corrosion, so electrons cannot flow between the coupled metals. Mixed metallurgies in systems can make consistent use of dielectric unions challenging. It is a practical example of interrupting the corrosion circuit at the metallic path.
