Ionic lattice

Definition

An ionic lattice is the ordered, alternating arrangement of oppositely charged ions that holds a solid salt together. Calcium carbonate scale is an ionic lattice formed between calcium and carbonate ions.

Acid cleaning works by sending high concentrations of hydrogen ions to attack this lattice, pulling carbonate out of the rigid structure. As carbonate is converted to bicarbonate and beyond, the lattice loses cohesion and the solid dissolves. The strength of the lattice is why mechanical cleaning often cannot remove built-up scale.
