Iron Oxidation and Precipitation
Definition
The process by which soluble ferrous iron is oxidized to ferric iron, which precipitates rapidly as iron hydroxide.
Ferrous (Fe2+) iron is generally soluble, but it is quickly oxidized to the ferric (Fe3+) form, which precipitates rapidly as iron hydroxide. High iron levels foul equipment and encourage iron-related bacteria. Control routes include aeration and filtration, coagulation, greensand oxidation, lime softening, deionization, cation exchange, and corrosion source control.
