The same electrochemical force that destroys a bacterial cell also attacks steel, because oxidation only follows electron availability and does not distinguish biology from metallurgy.

This is why oxidants are both indispensable and dangerous in water treatment. Added oxidants such as chlorine, bromine, ozone, and peroxide take electrons wherever they can find them, killing cells or corroding exposed metal. They do not discriminate; they only react.
