Scaling Drivers
Definition
The category of dissolved ions whose chief risk is building scale on surfaces, including calcium, magnesium, silica, and the carbonate system.
These ions precipitate as hard deposits that foul heat transfer surfaces, especially under inverse solubility conditions in boilers and heat exchangers. They are controlled through softening, reverse osmosis or deionization, inhibitors, and pH or alkalinity control. Knowing an ion is a scaling driver tells operators to watch for deposition when its number climbs on a lab report.
