The slow, reaction-based way a small amount of silica enters solution, more like a gradual surface reaction than ionic dissolution.
A small amount of silica dissolves by reacting slowly with water to form silicic acid, with water chipping away at its edges one unit at a time. Because the Si-O framework lacks discrete ions, water struggles to dismantle it completely and often carries silica as colloidal or polymeric material. Much of Earth’s crust is silica and aluminosilicate minerals built on this stubborn framework.
