Total Dissolved Solids Measurement
Definition
The classical lab method of measuring dissolved solids by filtering a sample, evaporating the water, and weighing the residue, reported in mg/L.
The result is the mass of dissolved material left behind after the water is removed. It works well in the lab but is too slow for real-time field control, which is why conductivity becomes valuable as a proxy. It is the most fundamental direct measure of how crowded a solution has become with dissolved material.
