Definition

A rearrangement of the ppm mass ratio used to compute ppm from a mass of substance added to a known volume of water.

Mass of substance added divided by mass of resulting solution, multiplied by one million, gives ppm in solution. It derives from the standard dosage formula: dosage in lb equals volume in gal times 8.34 lb/gal times ppm over one million. For example, adding 17 lb of sodium chloride to 300 gal of water yields about 6,750 ppm.
