Alkalinity buffering

Definition

Alkalinity is the most common buffering system in natural waters, working through weak acids and conjugate bases, most importantly the carbonate system, to absorb disturbances from both directions. It describes the future capacity to resist pH change.

While pH describes the current intensity of equilibrium, alkalinity describes the reserve capacity to resist change, a distinction the chapter stresses repeatedly. The bottled alkaline-water example shows that mildly elevated pH without alkalinity collapses instantly against stomach acid.
