pH as equilibrium position
Definition
pH measures how far equilibrium has been forced to move, the position where the most restless charge in the water has settled, not how much chemical was added. It describes the current intensity of equilibrium.
This distinction is the central lesson of the chapter: the over-neutralization happened because pH was read as a quantity rather than a position. Because the scale is logarithmic, a one-point move masked a 90 percent reduction in hydrogen concentration. Read as a position, pH predicts scaling, corrosion, biological activity, and disinfectant behavior.
