Biological pH tolerance

Definition

Enzymes, membranes, and whole metabolic pathways operate only within narrow proton ranges. Push pH far enough and the microbiology stops cooperating, for better or worse depending on what is wanted.

Biology pays the same tax as chemistry: pH decides whether organisms thrive or fail. This matters in water treatment both when growth is desired and when it must be suppressed. The alkaline-water example notes that enzymes, mucosal signaling, and reflux dynamics are more complex than simple neutralization.
