pH controls chemistry
Definition
Although hydrogen and hydroxide concentrations are tiny compared with calcium, alkalinity, chlorides, or dissolved solids, pH still sets the rules of engagement for the whole system. A small shift in pH can completely alter which chemistry is allowed to happen.
pH decides disinfection efficiency through chlorine speciation, corrosion through magnetite stability, scaling through calcium carbonate solubility, and biological activity through enzyme and membrane tolerance. It is never just one more box on the log sheet; it reorganizes the chemistry of the water in front of you. Reading pH as a position reveals what will scale, corrode, grow, and what the chlorine is actually doing.
