Bonding
Definition
The process by which atoms rearrange valence electrons to reach a lower total energy, achieved in water chemistry mainly by transferring or sharing electrons.
Atoms bond because the resulting electron arrangement is lower in energy, not because the elements themselves change. Protons stay fixed while electrons transfer, share, and redistribute toward filled valence shells. The two primary strategies are ionic bonding (outright transfer) and covalent bonding (cooperative sharing).
