Borrowed Order

Definition

Borrowed order is the idea that the orderly crystalline structure of a refined metal is an unstable, energy-intensive arrangement held in opposition to entropy. Corrosion is the cost of repaying that borrowed order.

Mining ore, stripping oxygen, and forcing atoms into rigid lattices consumes enormous energy and produces a structure that exists against entropy. The delocalized shared electrons that give metals strength and conductivity are also mobile and exposed, providing an easy escape path. Corrosion is therefore not a material defect but the natural cost of maintaining that temporary order.
