Corrosion
Definition
Corrosion is the electrochemical process by which a refined metal returns to a lower-energy, more stable form, losing material to its environment. It is metal reorganizing itself into a lower-energy compound, not simply dissolving away.
Corrosion is thermodynamically favored and therefore inevitable because metals exist in a high-energy state forced on them by refining. It is enabled, accelerated, and shaped by the surrounding system rather than being a property of the metal alone. The practical questions are not whether corrosion occurs but where, how fast, and how violently it localizes. It proceeds as an electrical current flowing through the metal once a complete corrosion cell exists.
