Boundary layer

Definition

The thin region of slowed flow near a surface where shear forces are reduced.

Cells that find a surface irregularity or deposit that breaks the boundary layer escape the full force of flow and are more likely to stay attached. Low-flow zones inside the boundary layer give weakly attached cells the time they need to strengthen their grip and produce more EPS. Disrupting these stagnant zones through flow management is part of effective biological control.
