Carryover
Definition
The contamination of steam with liquid boiler water and everything dissolved in it. It carries solids into places designed to see only pure steam.
Carried droplets deposit dissolved and suspended solids in the steam header, on turbine blades, inside control valves, and across heat exchangers. At 60 to 100 miles per hour a droplet hits a turbine blade like a bullet, and even without turbines carryover fouls steam traps and creates water hammer. It occurs through two mechanisms, priming and foaming.
