Foaming

Definition

Chemical carryover in which dissolved solids, alkalinity, or organic contaminants stabilize bubbles at the boiling surface so foam builds and is swept into the steam outlet.

Oils, greases, and surfactants, along with high TDS and alkalinity, prevent bubbles from breaking cleanly so foam persists and rides into the steam. Foaming is the primary reason for blowdown, which keeps dissolved solids in the range where bubble behavior stays predictable. Operating below ASME and ABMA guidelines for TDS and alkalinity is the main defense.
