Cohesion

Definition

The attraction of water molecules to one another, driven by hydrogen bonds, which holds the bulk fluid together so it moves as a coherent whole.

Because the individual hydrogen bonds are weak and fleeting, water stays low in viscosity and pours freely, yet collectively the bonds pull molecules into a constantly shifting embrace. This combination is what enables efficient convection, carrying energy away from a surface through water’s own movement. It is captured in the rule that cohesion connects water to itself.
