Definition

A test specimen exposed in the system and later analyzed to provide indirect evidence of MIC and surface corrosion.

Coupons combined with deposit analysis give indirect evidence over weeks to months, with sulfide staining, black deposits, odor, and localized pitting indicating possible MIC or SRB activity. Confirmation requires supporting evidence rather than a single result. They are one of the few ways to interrogate surface conditions directly.
