The use of multiple indirect tests and trend analysis to infer hidden biological activity, since routine measurements sample only bulk water.

Heterotrophic plate counts, ATP assays, dip slides, and culture tests all measure planktonic life and are history books rather than live feeds of surface activity. Effective reconnaissance relies on patterns such as rising biocide demand, increasing differential pressure, drift between chemistry and performance, and rapid rebound after treatment. Coupons, probes, pressure-drop trends, and visual inspection give partial, indirect evidence of the surfaces where decisions are actually made.
