Critical Size

Definition

The threshold cluster size beyond which adding ions lowers free energy and the cluster becomes a stable nucleus.

Below critical size the cost of the new solid liquid interface dominates and the cluster redissolves. Once a cluster grows past this threshold the energetic balance flips and further growth is favorable. Threshold inhibitors work precisely by preventing nascent nuclei from reaching this size.
