Dissolved Gases
Definition
Gases held in water by physical equilibrium rather than by hydration, entering and leaving the surface until balance is reached.
Gas molecules continuously enter and leave the water until a balance is reached between gas above and gas within, and at fixed temperature the amount held is proportional to partial pressure. Most atmospheric gases are nonpolar, so their solubility is limited and sensitive to temperature, pressure, and agitation. Oxygen drives oxidation and corrosion, while carbon dioxide converts partly to carbonic acid and shifts pH and carbonate chemistry.
