Definition
The classification of everything water carries into suspended solids, dissolved solids, and dissolved gases, defined by the outcome of water’s encounter with each.
The categories are defined by what water leaves intact, what it dismantles, and what it holds in equilibrium. Suspended solids survive because dissolution is unfavorable, dissolved solids are fully incorporated through hydration, and dissolved gases are governed by physical equilibrium. Each category requires a different control strategy in industrial water systems.
