Evaporator
Definition
The chiller heat exchanger where low-pressure liquid refrigerant boils at about 38 to 42 degrees Fahrenheit and absorbs latent heat from the chilled water.
The refrigerant enters cold and at low pressure, and the evaporator keeps pressure low enough for it to boil, drawing building heat out of the chilled water flowing over the tubes. The chilled water leaves around 42 to 44 degrees Fahrenheit to return to the building. This is where the chiller performs its useful cooling work.
