Film-Forming Inhibitors

Definition

Film-forming inhibitors prevent the corrosion circuit from assembling by bonding to the metal surface and blocking contact with water rather than slowing reactions. They form hydrophobic barriers over the metal.

Azoles specifically control copper corrosion by chemically bonding to the copper surface and forming hydrophobic films that block water access and suppress both anodic and cathodic reactions. Filming amines or film-forming amines operate similarly in boilers and condensate systems, bonding to the metal to create hydrophobic barriers that protect against oxygen, carbonic acid, and iron transport. They stop the circuit by preventing contact rather than by raising resistance to an active reaction.
