Free Body Diagram

Definition

A reasoning tool that isolates a single component, identifies every force acting on it, maps its connection points, and traces a change through the system to predict where it will manifest.

The free body diagram puts the four mass-balance questions to work for any component such as a condenser tube, tower basin, deaerator, or boiler drum. Its purpose is to make the system traceable rather than abstract, forcing the analyst to walk upstream instead of reacting to the most visible symptom. A complete field diagram defines boundary, inputs, outputs, internal accumulation, transformations, and pillar analysis.
