Iron-related bacteria (IRB)

Definition

Bacteria that contribute to deposit formation and alter local redox conditions in ways that support localized corrosion.

IRB help build deposits and create surface environments where corrosion can localize and persist. By altering local redox conditions they reinforce the differential cells that drive MIC. They feed the electrochemical mechanism rather than replacing it.
