Makeup Water

Definition

The fresh water added to replace evaporation and blowdown losses, whose ion levels set the baseline for cycles of concentration.

Its volume and chemistry are part of the mass balance, since what enters sets the load of minerals and gases that concentrate downstream. Checking makeup volume is part of diagnosing why a reading drifted, for example whether oxygen load rose. Makeup chemistry feeds the cycles of concentration in cooling and the dissolved load in boilers. It is a primary input in any system free body diagram.
