The colonization of water systems by living organisms that build biofilm and alter local chemistry.
Biology builds shelter, alters local chemistry, consumes oxidants, and persists because living systems adapt under pressure. Biofilms create anaerobic microenvironments, trap nutrients, and let organisms such as sulfate reducing bacteria generate corrosive byproducts. Higher pH that weakens the oxidizing biocide species increases biological pressure even without any change in feed rate.
