Mild Steel Passivation
Definition
Carbon steel forms a loose, porous oxide layer composed primarily of iron oxides that offers only limited corrosion resistance. It slows corrosion but does not prevent it.
The film provides limited resistance to electron transfer and oxygen diffusion, and it is patchy and easily disturbed. Once breached, corrosion resumes immediately at the exposed site. Mild steel survives mainly because operating conditions often stay stable enough to avoid repeatedly stripping the film away, not because the film is robust.
