Passivation
Definition
Passivation is the slowing of corrosion by thin surface films that form at the metal-water interface as a natural result of the corrosion process. It is not immunity but a ceasefire that increases resistance.
As anodic oxidation releases metal ions, they combine with anions in solution to form thin films that restrict electron transfer, ion migration, and oxidant access without eliminating the anodic or cathodic reactions. These films make the corrosion circuit harder to maintain, which is why many metals survive for years. Because passivation only raises resistance and does not remove the underlying conditions, any chemical, mechanical, or biological disturbance can restart the attack.
