Definition

The tendency of rivers, lakes, and groundwater to settle into a consistent pH range because the carbonate system buffers ordinary disturbances.

Carbon dioxide enters from the atmosphere while bicarbonate and carbonate enter from dissolved rocks, and the two sources converge into a natural buffering system that usually holds pH around 6 to 8. Bicarbonate in the middle of the system softens both acid and base disturbances before they become dramatic pH swings. This is why most natural waters are not chemically fragile.
