P-alkalinity
Definition
The alkalinity neutralized before the phenolphthalein endpoint at about pH 8.3, including all hydroxide and half of the carbonate but no bicarbonate.
During the P titration, hydroxide is neutralized (OH- plus H+ to H2O) and carbonate is converted to bicarbonate (CO3 2- plus H+ to HCO3-), but the titration stops before bicarbonate is neutralized. That half-carbonate behavior is the key that lets the P-to-M comparison reveal speciation. The standard relationships span P equals 0 (all bicarbonate) through P equals M (all hydroxide).
