Passive Oxide Layer
Definition
The protective oxide film on metal surfaces that resists corrosion and can be disrupted by corrosive anions like chloride and sulfate.
Chloride is a corrosive anion that disrupts this protective oxide layer, increasing corrosion of metal surfaces. Sulfate is likewise considered corrosive. Protecting or maintaining this layer is a central goal of corrosion control, achieved through inhibitor strategy, pH control, and metallurgy selection.
