pH Control

Definition

The control variable describing hydrogen ion activity in water, governing metal attack, inhibitor and biocide efficacy, and solubility equilibria.

pH can be extremely detrimental to metal surfaces and to inhibitor and biocide effectiveness, and it has a significant impact on several solubility equilibria. It is adjusted with acids or bases. Arbitrated by the smallest atom in existence, hydrogen, its influence on solubility, corrosion, scaling, and biological activity is the focus of the next chapter.
