Removing the Oxidizer (Oxygen Control)

Definition

Removing the oxidizer starves the corrosion circuit by eliminating oxygen, the preferred electron acceptor, so the cathode loses its reaction. Fewer oxidizers mean fewer cathodic reactions.

In closed systems like boilers, oxygen is removed mechanically through deaeration and chemically through oxygen scavengers such as sulfite, bisulfite, or organic reducing agents, often used together because even trace oxygen sustains corrosion. This does not protect the metal directly but deprives the cathode of its preferred reaction, weakening the circuit regardless of surface chemistry. It only works in closed systems, since open systems like cooling towers continuously replenish oxygen from the air.
