Cathodic Control
Definition
Cathodic control slows corrosion by increasing resistance at the cathode, often by encouraging a thin calcium carbonate film at the surface. If electron consumption is slowed, the whole circuit weakens.
Cathodic reactions generate hydroxide and raise local pH, which shifts carbonate equilibria and favors calcium carbonate precipitation right at the metal surface, forming a whisper-thin discontinuous film that interferes with oxygen access and electron transfer. This film is fugitive, dissolving when conditions change and reforming when they return, so its strength lies in equilibrium rather than durability. Waters with sufficient calcium and alkalinity can support it naturally, while ultra-soft, low-alkalinity waters are corrosive because the cathode has nothing to hide behind.
