Sensor Validation

Definition

Checking a sensor reading against a fresh grab sample measured independently with a calibrated handheld meter. It is distinguished from calibration, which adjusts the sensor to a known standard.

The golden rule is never to trust a sensor you have not tested against a calibrated handheld meter. Calibration adjusts the sensor output to match a known standard, while validation confirms the live reading against an independent grab sample. Blowdown conductivity controllers in particular must be validated on every visit because a low reading silently lets cycles run away.
