Smallest Lever Principle

Definition

The final diagnostic step of pulling the smallest control action that corrects the cause rather than the reading.

Rather than maximizing a pump or fully opening blowdown, the operator identifies the minimal intervention that addresses the actual driver. This prevents overcorrection and the cascade of new problems that aggressive adjustments create. It pairs with the wisdom of slowing down to see the system before reaching for the lever. It is the action stage of the Blueprint Method.
