Solvent Power of Water

Definition

Water’s talent for dissolving almost any substance, carrying dissolved matter that then determines what it can do to the surfaces it touches.

Dissolution is reorganization rather than destruction: the crystal lattice gives way to hydration shells around the freed ions. Water carries what it touches, and what it carries determines its effect on every surface it contacts. The solvent power flows directly from the hydrogen-bond network’s ability to surround charged species. It sets up both scaling and corrosion chemistry downstream.
