Hydrogen-Bond Network
Definition
The hydrogen-bond network is the web of hydrogen bonds linking water molecules, through which protons are handed off. It is the medium that enables fast proton transport and self-ionization.
No single bond survives, but the structure they collectively build persists and behaves as a cohesive whole. The network transmits disturbances molecule to molecule, stores and slowly releases heat, and steadies abrupt changes. It is also what carries dissolved minerals into systems as scale, delivers oxygen to metal for corrosion, and supplies microbial life, making it the central blueprint from which heat transfer, solubility, corrosion, scaling, and life all flow.
